William A. Tanenbaum is the Head of the Technology Transaction practice at Arent Fox, the leader of the Health Care IT section of the Health Care practice group, and a partner in the Firm’s Corporate & Securities practice. He is a Past President of the International Technology Law Association and is the only lawyer Officer of SIM (NY Chapter), an industry CIO association. Bill’s practice focuses on technology, cybersecurity and intellectual property, with an emphasis on IT and IP transactions, Health Care IT, outsourcing, data transactions, cloud services, strategic intellectual property counseling, and the technology and IP aspects of corporate transactions. He advises clients on upgrading computer systems and integrating cloud, mobile, social media, Big Data and the Internet of Things into existing IT systems. He implements the IT that implements cybersecurity.

Bill was named “Lawyer of the Year” in Information Technology in New York by US News & World Report/Best Lawyers in 2013. In 2016, he was named as one of the top five Information Technology lawyers in the United States by Who’s Who Legal. He is ranked in Band One in Technology & Outsourcing in New York and in Band Two nationally by Chambers: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and recognized by Legal 500 as a “leading authority” on Technology & Outsourcing. Bill is also recognized as an “IP Star,” as a “Life Science Star,” as one of the “Clean Tech 100,” and as a “leading lawyer in E-Commerce” and “Recommended in Licensing” (by Managing IP Handbook 2015, LMG Life Science Guide 2015, LMG Clean Technology and Renewable Energy Guide, IAM’s The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners, and Who’s Who Legal, respectively).

Bill has been ranked in Chambers since 2003. Chambers found that clients say that Bill: “is a brilliant lawyer. I cannot imagine working with anyone else;” “brings extremely high integrity, a deep intellect, fearless and a practical, real-world mindset to every problem;” is “at the stage in his career where no issue is unfamiliar or too complex or intimidating to take on;” and “is efficient, solution-driven and makes excellent judgment calls.” The Clean Tech Guide reports that he is “one of the best IP lawyers I have worked with.”

Other leading legal ranking publications agree and find that Bill “has a fantastic reputation and clients ‘couldn’t wish for a more skilled lawyer’” (Who’s Who Legal); is “endorsed by all as a ‘strong, pragmatic lawyer who knows exactly how to get a deal done’” and "a leading authority security [and] privacy" (World’s 250 Leading Patent and Technology Lawyers); “draws on a truly impressive array of technology law expertise" and “has particular expertise in cloud computing, big data, social media [and] mobile computing” (Legal 500).

Clients also rely on Bill for IP litigations and settling disputes. He led a team that won a victory in a patent litigation for a health care client at the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He serves as an advocate in arbitration and as an arbitrator. He was appointed to the 2016 and 2015 “List of the World’s Leading Technology Neutrals.” The List is administered by the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center. Appointment is by invitation only.

Bill founded and chairs PLI’s annual Health Care IT Conference, founded and co-chairs its annual Outsourcing Conference, speaks on IP Licensing and IT at PLI’s IP Law Institute, on outsourcing at Sourcing Interests Group Global Summits and on cloud, data sharing and IT-enabled cybersecurity at other industry and legal conferences.
